It was a fine sunny day with a wind that didn’t know where it was going, which made the Victoria’s somewhat difficult to control – an understatement if I ever heard one. So congrats to John W. for mastering the conditions.

A great weekend with some lovely sunny weather. The odd shower and rumble of thunder did not keep the visitors away. Sunday was particularly busy. PMMC volunteers were there to man the stand and sail boats over the two days. Many thanks to those members who helped out, and got involved in setting up. Special thanks to David W. for organising our attendance, and our exhibits. Thanks to Jakub G., Rob P. and Phil P. for the pictures.

Just a quick reminder that we shall be at the above show over the forthcoming weekend with a display of many types and sizes of model boats etc, and with hopefully plenty of time to wander around the show area to see what’s what in the agricultural world. https://eghamroyalshow.org.uk/
David Newall should be there with a motor vehicle of some sort in the vehicle display, and Jakub will be wandering anywhere and everywhere taking pictures of anything that moves.
There will, I understand, be steam powered vehicles on display, as the Dorset Steam Fair has been cancelled for this year, but will be back in 2024!

  • Sailing Barge Get Together – no sailing due to weed.

The Barge Match due to be held on Sunday 30th July has been changed to a “barge get together” as the lake is not in a suitable state for racing (See Above!)
Anyone with a barge is welcome to come but don’t expect much more than a small area to float in.
I will be there with boat or two but don’t expect much to happen except maybe the offer of a cup of coffee or tea from your chairman.

  • PHOENIX OPEN DAY CANCELLED

Members will be well aware of the lake weed issues that we have been battling against since the spring. We have spent many hours trying to keep it under control in front of the jetty and along the front of the ‘island’. However, the best we seem to achieve is to clear it on a Monday or Tuesday for limited sailing on a Wednesday only to see it back the following week. Regrettably Silvermere cannot get the weed cutter in because of the low water level.

At the moment, yachts with smooth keels and built-in rudders (e.g. Moonbeams) seem to sail without problems provided there is sufficient wind, but other types of hulls and anything with a propeller are liable to get stuck.

Therefore, it is with great regret that your committee feels it necessary to cancel the Open Day this year, especially as we will not have a rescue dinghy available on the day.

At the moment we are planning to have the 2024 Open Day early in the spring before the weed becomes a problem.

  • Jetty Lower Deck Replaced

Due to safety concerns for members created by rotting timbers, a new deck has been laid on the lower part of the jetty in readiness for open day. Thanks to the team of Alex, David, Martin, Richard for the work done and time spent getting the materials and bringing the equipment to get the job done.

It was evident that the spongy artificial grass covering was hiding some seriously rotted timbers underneath. Having removed the covering the timbers were showing signs of their age and condition, some more than others. As a result the whole of the lower section has been re-boarded and recovered with the original grass that was in surprisingly good condition.

The pressure treated timber should last another 5 years use before needing to be replaced.

Many thanks to Alex, David, Martin, Richard for taking the time to do the work. Also for organising the materials and bringing the tools and equipment need to install the new decking.
